Sifting of World Trade Center Debris
Sifting of World Trade Center Debris
The NYC’s medical examiner’s office has begun sifting through the debris from the September 11th terrorist attacks. They are searching for any human remains that may have not been found during the recovery that took place after the attack in 2001.
According to the Washington Post, the work began Monday morning and is expected to take a total of ten weeks, but
the Deputy Mayor of New York City said that “we will continue DNA testing until all recovered remains that can be matched with a victim are identified.”
In 2006 the search for remains around the World Trade Center site resumed after a five year hiatus. The city was able to collect over 60 truckloads of debris from the surrounding areas of the World Trade Center site over the past two and a half years. The debris has now been taken to a lab in Staten Island where it will be examined for human remains.
Researchers have already found 1,800 pieces of human remains in the debris collected. Over 2,750 people died in the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001. Only 1,634 of those people have been identified so far, and the families of the remaining victims are holding on to hop that this research may help them finally find some closure.
