Nutella Theft: 5 Tons Of Tasty Spread Stollen
It seems that a band of thieves in Germany can’t get enough of Nutella, an Italian made spread concocted of chocolate and hazelnuts.
Five tons of Nutella, valued at almost $21,000, was stolen over the weekend from a trailer parked in Bad Hersfeld. Police officials are still trying to figure out how many thieves were involved in the food heist and are asking for the public’s help to see if there were any eyewitnesses to the Nutella caper.
The region where the Nutella trailer was broken into is well known as a place where truck drivers park their rigs over the weekend.
There have been at least two other major food thefts reported in the neighborhood recently, including five tons of coffee and more than 30,000 cans of a popular brand of liquid energy beverage.
Nutella has become such a popular snack in America that many college campuses are reporting that cases of the creamy rich nut spread, similar in consistency to peanut butter but with a much more intense flavor, have been disappearing from many college cafeteria storage areas.
A California woman sued Nutella’s makers last year for false claims that the sugary treat is a healthy breakfast menu item.
