Police Seeking Identity of Grecian Blonde Angel
Law enforcement officials in Greece are seeking the help of Interpol in determining the identity of a young girl with blonde hair and green eyes discovered living in a Roma camp located in the center of the country. For now, police are calling the girl, who is approximately four years old, Maria. Police were in the area where she was discovered searching for an encampment of people dealing drugs. Although she can speak some Roma as well as a few words of Greek, officers think she looks like someone who grew up in nearby Bulgaria or Scandinavia because of her light coloring.
Police said in a statement that the pair had registered 14 children in three different Greek regions. They gave authorities conflicting accounts as to how the mystery girl ended up in their charge, with the mother alleging she gave birth to six children in less than 10 months.
Police are hopeful that the DNA evidence taken from Maria may match that of a girl reported missing elsewhere in Europe. Local news media reports are referring to Maria as a “blonde angel.” Her picture has been widely circulated throughout Greece and she has captured the attention of the nation. Although Maria was living with a man and a woman in the Roma camp, DNA tests discovered that they were not her biological parents. The couple has since been arrested under suspicion of abducting a minor child and police believe this blonde angel may be a victim of human trafficking.
Two other little girls and a boy were also found with Maria at the camp. Their relationship to the couple has not yet been confirmed, although police say the children bear resemblance to the couple. The other 10 children remain unaccounted for.
