Rimes Explains How Music Video “Gasoline and Matches” Was Filmed On iPhone
LeAnn Rimes’ newest music video for her hit “Gasoline and Matches” is gaining speed after news reports hit that animator Ian Padgham created the video using none other than an iPhone. Padgham, who has become known for his short 6 second video clips using the Vine application, was sought out by Rime’s producer, Darrell Brown, to direct the video.
Also featuring Rob Thomas and Jeff Beck, the video is a stop-motion animation using “toys” to portray the fast paced romance between Gus Gasoline and Myrtle Matches. Padgham met Rimes, who was on tour in Dublin, to film her part and worked with Thomas in New York City before finally putting it all together in his living room in San Francisco.
“You still get Rob and me in performance mode”, Rimes noted in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “but I love how he entwined us with the (animated) characters.”
Padgham states that anyone can use this technology to make their own creative videos, but patience is key. “It’s all very basic and rudimentary,” swears Padgham. “There are certainly plenty of applications like Vine that are free that people could use to just do the same thing, shot by shot. It takes a lot of work and thought, but anyone can get a phone or camera and start making their own similar things.”
“Gasoline and Matches” is Rimes’ newest single from her album, Spitfire. As she nears the end of her two decade contract with Curb label, Rimes explains how in the midst of such a big transition, she enjoyed making a “creative passion project”.
