RoboCop reboot trailer is all kinds of cool
While the old franchise of Robocop films now looks largely dated and a bit cheesy, the new reboot by Brazilian director José Padilha promises to bring new relevance to the story.
In the reboot, the time frame is Detroit, Michigan in the year 2028. While there is a strong possibility that the city may be nothing more than a ghost town by that time given its bankruptcy status and tens of thousands of vacant homes, in the film, it is still a thriving metropolis with a major crime problem.
The storyline remains the same: evil American corporation taking advantage of one officer’s ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty to convert him into a police droid. However, the reboot will weave into the story the morality of drone strikes and Iran.
Director José Padilha is no stranger to police drama. He directed the hugely successful films in Brazil called “Elite Squad” and “Elite Squad: Enemy Within” focusing on corruption within the police force. Most recently, Brazilians have been outraged over revelations that the US NSA organization was eavesdropping on phone conversations in South America’s largest economy as part of their anti-terror program. Some of that distrust is no doubt evident in Padilha’s Robocop film.
The early reaction online has been fairly positive.

I said this when Total Recall came out. Stop saying remake. Say Diet Robocop. Or perhaps Robocop Lite.

The trailer for the Robocop remake is… interesting. I’ll withhold judgement until I see it, but the original’s satirical bite seems absent.
