Second Teen Hiker Found Alive

Kyndall Jack has a lot to be grateful for these days.

The 18-year-old hiker was found alive and well after having disappeared three days earlier.

It turns out that Jack wasn’t that far from the location where her hiking buddy Nicolas Cendoya, age 19, was found 24 hours prior. At the time she was found, Jack was on a steep slope. Lt. Jason Park of the Orange County Sheriff’s department said that Jack’s extraction was “very difficult” due to her being on a rocky ledge.

The rescue was not without incident though as a police officer was injured during her extraction. Lieutenant Park believes Jack wasn’t going to be able to last much longer clinging to the ledge.

At the time of her rescue, she was disoriented and physically exhausted. Rescuers asked her basic questions to determine her mental state and found her unable to explain how she got on the slope or even what day of the week it was.

“She was kind of clinging to the ledge on the cliff side, kind of going in and out of consciousness,” said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Jim Moss, a paramedic who treated her. “We climbed up to her and could see she was in a lot of pain, obviously completely dehydrated and very weak.

“She wouldn’t have made it much longer. She’s really lucky,” he told The Associated Press in an interview shortly after the rescue.

Jack was also having trouble breathing. As rescuers conducted her extraction, they saw her going in and out of consciousness from dehydration.

Her hiking buddy is still in serious condition at the hospital but is showing gradual improvement.

Cendoya’s family said they’re very grateful that he was found alive.

“We just want to thank God, and we’re very happy. Thank you very much to everybody that volunteered and helped out,” said Patricia Sanchez, Cendoya’s cousin.
