sex assault suspect blames twin for the crime
1st Lt. Aaron Lucas is on trial for a string of sexual assaults of young girls which in one case was as young as eight. The assaults are the result of an abduction in one instance and picking up teenage girls as hitch hikers in others. The crimes were committed in Colorado, Texas and Alabama over the years 2007 through 2012. One of the charges against Lucas is that he tried to persuade 11 girls to enter his car over a three year period in Colorado.
The case against him is formidable given that DNA evidence links the Army field artillery officer to the sexual attack on the 8-year-old girl and other crimes committed in Texas and Alabama. However, Lieutenant Lucas is claiming that a doppelganger did it. In this case, the doppelganger is quite literally his evil twin, Brian Lucas. Now, “evil” would be the appropriate term by the allegations that Aaron Lucas has made. Brian Lucas has not been charged with any crimes, but he has lived in both Alabama and Texas where many of the crimes were committed.
The presiding judge in the trial will allow the defense to finger Brian Lucas as the real culprit given that his DNA is a spot on match; he and his brother are identical twins. It will be up to the jury to decide the outcome.
“Whether it’s persuasive or not — that’s not my role,” the judge said. “It’s the role of the jury.”
