Is it in the air like some virus or did stupidity seep its way into the water supply? Yet another person sparks a controversy for appearing in “blackface”. Last month, singer-actress Julianne Hough had to issue an apology after she dressed up as “Crazy Eyes” Warren from the series “Orange is the New Black”. Next, a Georgia sheriff’s deputy wore a jail inmate’s stripped suit with blackface. Now, it has come out that an Ohio judge, Scott Nusbaum, also wore blackface for a Halloween party.

In the case of Judge Nusbaum, he and his wife choose a “Gone with the Wind” theme and she arrived as Scarlett O’Hara and he as a Negro servant. When news broke out regarding the story, Judge Nusbaum didn’t hesitate to apologize for his poor judgment. He met with President Olie Burton of the city’s local chapter of the NAACP. President Burton emerged from the conversation stating that he was satisfied with Judge Nusbaum’s contrition and accepted his apology and acknowledged the costume was in poor taste.

For his part, the judge stressed that his lapse in judgment was not a reflection of any maliciousness or hostility towards African-Americans.

“Although it was stupid, I certainly didn’t do it maliciously,” Nusbaum said. “I was born in this community and I’m sorry I let my community down.”

A local public defender spoke to Judge Nusbaum’s impartiality on the bench in a vote of confidence.
