Maria Sharapova Faces Criticism of Sugarpova Candy

Maria Sharapova, the world’s number two ranked tennis player, has launched her own line of sweets named Sugarpova. She’s now facing criticism for releasing a snack food targeted for teenage girls and women.

You would think that for someone as physically fit as Sharapova would produce a healthy line of snacks.

That is not the case with Sugarpova as each bag contains 21 tea spoons of sugar. There is more sugar in each bag of candy than two cans of Coca-Cola. The candy line is being sold as reflecting the fashionable and sweet side of the blonde haired Russian beauty. One thing is probably certain, anyone who regularly eats this snack won’t likely have the figure that the 6’2″ Sharapova has.

Maria created this line of premium candy because she has a sweet tooth. Critics worry that her stature will encourage a generation of girls already struggling with obesity to continue unhealthy eating habits. In a statement, Sharapova says she has always had a sweet tooth.

She explained that, as a girl, she would receive a lollipop as a reward for practicing hard on the tennis court and at age 25 she still expects a candy reward after a good practice.

Sugarpova is now available in the United States and sells for $5.99 a bag.

The sweets come in 142g bags, filled with an average of four servings of five sweets - but it would take an extraordinary amount of self-control for most people to stick to a meagre five
