Solar Plane Completes Epic US Journey

An epic journey started over two months ago has ended with success. The solar powered plane named Solar Impulse began its trek in San Francisco in early May and traversed the span of the U.S. making stops at Phoenix, Dallas-Fort Worth, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Dulles. The aircraft was piloted by Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg.

The aircraft is able to reach a cruising altitude of up to 30,000 feet and is powered exclusively by 11,000 solar cells which are located on the aircraft’s wings. The plane is able to reach a top speed of 45 mph.

The pilots planned to perform a fly-by over the Statue of Liberty on Sunday, but a small tear in the fabric of the left wing forced officials to decide to skip the event and proceed to the final stop at JFK airport in New York. The aircraft made its monumental landing at 11:09 p.m.

The plane was designed by Schindler, a Swiss elevator maker and aid from a Belgian chemical company, Solvay in an attempt to create an environmentally friendly aircraft. Plans are in place to create a modified version of the solar powered craft to be flown around the globe in 2015.
