Kampong Speu Province, Cambodia – Local villagers added deeper meaning to the term provincial when they hacked Khieu Porn, age 56, to death with machetes and severed his head. The man had been a traditional healer in the town, but a series of unexplained deaths in the town raised suspicion that he was a closet sorcerer invoking his powers of black magic on villagers, according to Som Chantha, a district police chief in the southern province of Kampong Speu.
“He had some magic powers and some people accused him of practising black magic,” Chantha said.
Now, it should be noted that people in Cambodia have a deeply rooted fear of black magic and as has been aptly demonstrated will turn violent towards practitioners of the dark arts. It then goes without saying that anyone touting themselves as a witch or sorcerer places a mark upon themselves.
So just what was the proof that this local healer was dabbling in black magic? His ex-wife recently remarried and her new husband died days after the wedding. Also, other villagers died recently in unexplained deaths.
“His wife divorced him and remarried another man who died just a week after their marriage… then some people in the commune also fell ill and died, so people accused him of using witchcraft,” Chantha said.
The murder of Porn occurred just as the village was celebrating a rice harvest. It is believed that a half-dozen men attacked him just outside the town. As per police, the killing of people suspected of black magic has become more common recent years. As much as 80% of the population of Cambodia live in rural villages.
