Dumpling poisoner jailed for life

It was early February nearly six years ago that a food scare gripped Japan regarding the safety of processed foods coming from neighboring China. The summer games in Beijing were only months away and the negative press generated from the food scare was an embarrassment to the Chinese government.

At the time, ten people reported vomiting and diarrhea after eating dumplings produced at a food processing plant in the Heibei province of China. It was also the same factory responsible for selling pork cutlets to the Japanese military. In addition, other types of frozen foods and meals were sold to Japan from that same facility. That prompted six major food recalls across the nation as stored pulled the food out of concerns it too may be tainted.

It turns out that the only food affected were dumplings laced with a pesticide called methamidophos. A disgruntled worker who had been demanding higher wages injected the pesticide into the dumplings as an act of retaliation against his employer. In all, 14 people took ill from the food, 4 in China and the rest in Japan. Now, it is reported that Mr. Lu Yueting, age 39, has been found guilty of poisoning the food and sentenced to life in prison.
