Hollywood Legends Auction Sells “Star Trek” Phaser for $231,000

Actor William Shatner may wish he had kept all the science fiction props used in his popular “Star Trek” television series during the 1960s after it was cancelled after three seasons. A phaser specially designed for use by his character, ship’s captain James Kirk, at the request of series creator Gene Roddenberry, sold at the Hollywood Legends auction over the weekend for almost five times what it was expected to bring.

The “Star Trek” phaser, expected to sell for $50,000, brought a whopping $231,000 winning bid instead. Juliens Auctions, which conducted the sale, did not release either the name of the phaser’s seller or the big spender who purchased the sci-fi prop for almost a cool quarter of a million dollars.

Other movie memorabilia sold at the two-day auction in Los Angeles included a buggy used in the movie “Alien”, and a costume from the movie “Stargate.” Although sex icon Marilyn Monroe has been dead for five decades, there is still extreme interest in anything connected to the blond movie star. One of her cocktail dresses sold for $25,000, quadruple its expected bid and one of the bras she wore while filming the movie “Some Like It Hot” brought over $28,000.
