Thai Taxi Driver Kills American Over Failure to Pay Fare

Bangkok, Thailand – 51-year-old American Troy Lee Pilkington, an employee of Caterpillar, had been working in Thailand for the past three years when he met an ignominious death this past Saturday after walking away from a cab without paying the 51 Baht fare which is roughly $1.78 USD as the cab sat in a traffic jam on the Sukhumvit Road (known as a busy thoroughfare).

The driver, 32-year-old Chidchai Utmacha, would have nothing of it and jumped out of the taxi, retrieved a 30cm machete (~1 ft. long) and ran down Pilkington and proceeded to hack him to death.

Utmacha then returned to his vehicle and fled the scene of the crime. Television cams installed throughout parts of the city allowed police to identify him and less than 24 hours later they arrived at his home with a warrant and took him into custody where he’ll face murder charges.

Utmacha says that Pilkington disrespected him by tossing a cup of hot coffee at him upon refusing demands that he pay his fare before leaving. None of that fully accounts for his behavior much less justifies the killing of a man. There is no word yet on whether Utmacha has a prior history of violence.
