travolta brother film school: Celebs Brother Opens School For The Disabled
John Travolta has an older brother named Joey, who is opening a film school for those with development disabilities. Located in Sacramento, it will be opening this September. Joey Travolta also owns Inclusion Films in Burbank, Bakersfield and Livermore which holds numerous workshops.
The newest branch in Sacramento will be offering courses to adults that have any type of developmental disability. Courses will be 20-weeks in length and will be teaching beginning media production and film skills.
It will be a hands-on learning environment where students work together with professionals in the industry. Students will produce short films in different genres, such as documentaries, PSA’s, commercials or just pure entertainment films. Graphic design, sales and advertising will also be included in the course. The workshop can be taken four times by an approved student.
The goals are to give the student’s practical skills which will give much needed work skill to allow a person with developmental disabilities to become employed and independent. Joey has a special education degree and has been a teacher to special needs students. He began acting in 1979 and went on to become a writer, producer and director.
“It’s more than just a film-making camp. We create a safe environment to communicate, collaborate and produce something to share. When our campers see the finished product at the red carpet screening, they have a sense of accomplishment as well as community. It gives them a voice,” he said of the summer camp held in Pittsburg.
The class description states: “Inclusion Films Practical Film Workshop is a 20 week vocational program designed to provide adults with developmental disabilities an initial entry-level working knowledge of film production and related industries and then build those skills over subsequent 20 week workshops.”
Inclusion Films is also a partner of the Heal and Filmlab Productions which are non-profits that have two-week workshops for children ages 10 to 17, many of those children have autism.
