Couple Facing Misdemeanor Charge for Abandoning Adopted Son

 

Cleveland and Lisa Cox, residents of Cincinnati, Ohio, are currently facing a misdemeanor charge of “reckless abandonment” for surrendering their adopted son of 9 years to Butler County Children Services.

The child has lived with the family since he was 3 months old. He has a history of aggressive and violent behavioral issues and was said to have had daily outbursts. He has been a patient at Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital for treatment of these issues before, but the most troubling event happened this past August when he threatened the lives of the entire family. A report was filed at this time with the local sheriff’s office due to the mother’s concern about her son’s mental state.

The child was surrendered last month, and the parents’ arrest was unsuccessfully attempted on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Cox had removed their other two children from school. The couple voluntarily turned themselves in on Friday, going into jail and having their bonds set at $10,000 each.

Cases of adoptive parents giving up their children are rare, especially when the child has been raised with the family from such a young age. Legal obligations to provide parental care for the child usually prevent this.
