London, England – Virgin Media will give the public yet another reason to ride the metro transit: WI-FI access.

The company made the announcement that six new tube stations have been added to the number supporting WI-FI access. The newly added stations are East Putney, Kilburn, Parsons Green, West Kensington, Southgate, and Golders Green. It should be noted that the WI-FI access in those stations is now online and they make use of super-fast WI-FI service. In all, 137 stations now have access.

As per Virgin Media, the total number of smart devices successfully making use of their service has reached 800,000 with 95% of the activity is from Apple smart devices and Android-based smart technology. By far, Apple iOS devices are the most popular dominating 65% of the data usage. However, the trend is rapidly dropping. Just last year, Apple iOS accounted for 74% of the usage. Android has been eating up Apple customers like a pacman. Android usage now accounts for 30% usage which is a full ten point increase over last year.

One interesting trend is that once dominant Blackberry is experiencing a minor resurgence. Their usage on Virgin Media networks has increased 100% year to date, but that still accounts for only 5% of activity. Virgin Media does not have any stats of customer use of Windows-based smart devices. Windows devices have been selling well in the United States and Microsoft has recently purchased the cell phone division from Nokia which will allow them to brand their own phones.

As for Virgin Media, they claim the underground WI-FI service, initially started for the London Olympics, has been a resounding success with locals and tourists alike being very satisfied. Initially, the service supported only 10 tube stations. Naturally, Virgin Media is delighted with the customer response to their service.
