WhatsApp Down: WhatsApp suffers Major Outage
This has been an interesting week of sorts for Facebook. It began with Facebook announcing it would purchase rival messaging software WhatsApp for the exorbitant price of $19 billion. The move is certain to put Facebook far beyond rivals Twitter, Skype, and GMail. Prior to the announcement, Whatsapp enjoyed a user base of 419 million users which is more than Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, and Skype combined. Now, add Facebook’s 145 million users to the mix and there’s no question who the A-dog is when it comes to messaging software.
However, that gigantic technological advance will have to wait until the technological glitches plaguing the messaging software are resolved. Perhaps it’s due to a surge in new users, but Whatsapp has suffered a major outage affecting a large percentage of its base. The outage was first occurred Saturday morning at 11:00AM PT. A little more than an hour later, Whatsapp acknowledged the glitch via a tweet.
Uses are being inconvenienced by the outage, but in all likelihood it is a sign of the sudden interest in the app given the acquisition announcement by Facebook. While no company wants to experience an outage, success can induce one as new users overwhelm a defined set of servers handling requests.
