In Lithona, DeKalb County, Georgia, at least four large wild boars descended from wild and escaped domestic pigs have migrated into the Rockbridge Road area looking for food.
The boars have rummaged around in garbage cans and ripped into trash bags. They have also caused mild property damage, DeKalb County police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said.
“They’re causing quite a stir to say the least,” Parish said shortly before noon Tuesday, as she headed out to the neighborhood, about 17 miles east of downtown Atlanta.
The situation has frightened many residents and some even refuse to leave their homes or allow their children to walk to school bus stops or play outside.
Although adult wild boars are not overly aggressive or dangerous in general as they forage, they can become so if they feel there is a threat to themselves or their offspring.
Feral boars often stay near water sources, but the entire DeKalb County area is part of their natural territory.
One resident who just moved to the area from New Jersey, Tanisha Danner, told Fox 5 in Atlanta that the local DeKalb County Animal Control was not able to assist. Officials are trying to resolve the problem though and have stated that they hope to have the boars caught and caged by end of today. According to WSB-TV 2 Atlanta, they have obtained assistance with catching the wild boars from a volunteer trapper.
