Winnipeg, Manitoba – The Sunday hockey match between the Sagkeeng First Nation and the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation turned violent when Kainen Bell, age 12, got into a scrum with a rival player. The game was hosted at the Southdale Community Centre and was part of the Southeast Aboriginal Tournament. The fight was broken up by referees, but Bell wasn’t done yet and slashed the opposing player across his legs as his back was turned. Real act of bravery on Bell’s part.

Bell’s slash provoked an even bigger melee between the two teams. It was at that point that one of the referees, age 22, skated in to pull players apart and as he grabbed Bell, he lost his footing. Bell was slammed hard to the ice breaking his wrist and suffering a bruised neck and back. His family believes the referee assaulted the boy and is calling on police to file criminal charges against him.

However, the Southdale Community Centre president is standing by the referee saying he did what was requisite in attempting to break up the fight. He does not believe the young adult was attempting to harm Bell in any way. For his part, Bell would probably do fare better if he learned sportsmanship and a respect for adults.
