According to Forbes, Microsoft only accounts for one-fifth of Gates' $72 billion worth. Instead, he made the majority of his money through his investment firm Cascade, which owns portions of businesses like Deere & Co., the Canadian National Railway and Mexican Coke bottler Femsa. Despite giving away a reported $28 billion to charities between the years 2007 and 2012, Gates managed to become $9.8 billion richer since the start of 2013, Bloomberg's Billionaire Index reports.

The list included the 400 richest Americans. Second on the list was Warren Buffet, with a net worth of 58.5 billion. Larry Ellison secured third place with a 42 billion net worth. Charles Koch and his brother David Koch were fourth and fifth on the list with each one being worth 36 billion each.

An interesting figure to note is that the average net worth of everyone on the list was a staggering 5 billion. There are people making so much money these days that there was 61 billionaires that did not even make the top 400. Also, if you were to combine everyone on the lists net worth, it is $2.02 trillion. This is more than double of the 2003 top 400. Many people who made last years list did not make this years list even though their net worth remained the same.
