Chinese woman has twins at 60
Three years ago, Sheng Hailin made headlines as she became the oldest woman in China to give birth at age 60. Today, the now 63 year old is struggling to care for her children.
The decision to try to get pregnant via in vitro fertilization (IVF) was made when Hailin became severely depressed after her 29-year-old daughter died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Hailin said she needed have another child to survive the extreme loneliness she felt after losing her daughter. Despite the low effectiveness of IVF and the high risk involved in pregnancy at such an advanced age, doctors at a military hospital agreed to perform the procedure. The result was 4.1 pound Zhizhi and 3.2 pound Huihui who were born in May of 2010.
Hailin and her husband are both retired, but their retirement funds haven’t been sufficient to cover the cost of raising the girls. Hailin has since been forced to go back to work and now earns money by giving lectures throughout the country on health-related topics. She has hired two babysitters to help her care for the girls, as she is unable to perform some of the basic tasks, such as bathing, by herself.
She told the China Daily, “For the baby girls, I have given out all I have.”
