Colorado Youngster Born Male Wins Transgender Rights
Fountain, Colorado resident Coy Mathis, who was born a boy but is a transgender female who identifies as a female, won a big victory recently when state courts ruled that she be allowed to use the girls’ bathroom at school.
When the local school district denied Mathis the right to use the female rest facilities when at school, civil rights activists fought for the 6-year old, contending that their decision created a hostile environment in which to attend school.
The courts obviously agreed that Coy Mathis should be allowed to use the girls’ bathroom without being singled out or harassed.
Although Mathis was originally enrolled in the school system in kindergarten class as a male, she soon began experiencing deep depression because she insisted on dressing and identifying with the female gender.
Once Mathis graduated into the first grade, the school district imposed a bathroom restriction on the 6-year old, saying she could no longer use the female facilities but would have to use the staff bathroom or a bathroom located in the nurses’ office.
Mathis’ parents withdrew Coy from classes and began legal action against the school district, contending their child’s civil rights were being violated by not recognizing her transgender status.
