Dutch Woman Freezes Dead Mother, Was Too Sad To Let Her Go
In this small Dutch town of roughly 1,300 residents, police say a local woman kept her mother inside a freezer. No one is saying she did anything to harm the 83-year-old woman. Rather, it appears this is an extreme case of separation anxiety.
The elderly woman is believed to have died of natural causes and her daughter, who was her primary care giver for the past seventeen years, was too distraught to part ways with her mother’s remains, reports Courier Mail
Thus the daughter kept her mother close by via the freezer. Police stated that they do not believe the elderly woman was the victim of any crime, but have ordered an autopsy to rule that out conclusively.
“There was no indication that the mother didn’t die of natural causes, but the body has nevertheless been taken for an autopsy,” police spokeswoman Esther Boot said.
As for the daughter, she was taken down to the police station and questioned regarding the incident. Police found her to be profoundly grieving over the loss of her mother.
“She wanted to keep her nearby,” Boot said.
While it is a crime in Holland to keep a human body inside a freezer, the police have not stated whether or not they will charge the daughter for the offense. While rare, it is not unprecedented for people to go to such extremes when they are unable to cope with the loss of a loved one.
“We don’t yet know if there will be criminal proceedings, that’s up to the prosecutor,” Boot said.
“Technically it’s a crime to keep a body in the freezer.”
