Gaga $1m Gop Offer: Singer Says No Thanks
The Republican National Committee was so hot to get Lady Gaga to perform at their national convention in 2012 that not only did they offer the performer $1 million but sweetened the pot by offering her a sizeable donation in addition that would benefit a domestic violence shelter. Gaga turned them down flat.
The details of the failed offer to the off-beat entertainer, well-known for supporting Democratic president Barack Obama as well as embracing many liberal causes such as same-sex marriage, came to public attention after the event production company hired to secure Gaga was sued by Republican Party organizers planning last year’s convention.
In addition to Gaga, at least two other entertainers passed on the lucrative opportunity to provide professional entertainment to partying Republican convention goers in Tampa, including Pitbull and country-western favorite Dolly Parton.
Republican Party officials have denied that Gaga was ever under any serious consideration to be their convention headliner and indicated if she was made any type of monetary offer to perform, it was the work of an outside contractor hired by the RNC rather than members of the Republic Party planning committee itself. Gaga, who recently underwent successful surgery to correct a defect in her hip, had no comment about refusing their offer.
“In planning for our fundraiser in Tampa, e-mails we’re exchanged between AAN fundraising staff and outside vendors exploring various performance options. AAN is an independent group and is no way affiliated with or connected to the [Republican National Committee] nor was the RNC ever privy to these internal discussions,” the AAN said. “We considered some acts and didn’t seriously consider others, but we were ultimately happy with a great Kid Rock concert. Our events were independent from the official convention and the RNC.”
