Man Loses Life Savings to Carnival Game

A New Hampshire man recently lost his life savings to a carnival game. To be fair, those savings amounted to a relatively small $2,600. Henry Gribbohm started playing a “Tubs of Fun” game at a local carnival. Things quickly spiraled out of control, and Gribbohm found himself in a pretty big hole. Instead of walking away from the game, he came back the next day to continue playing.

He originally wanted to win an Xbox 360 Kinect, which retails for a reasonable $100. After playing the game for hours, he had lost $300 the first day. He then traveled home, grabbed his life savings, and returned the next day.

The remaining $2,300 whittled down to nothing with Gribbohm failing to win his coveted prize. However, Gribbohm returned the next day and complained to the operator, receiving $600 back and a rasta banana.

“You just get caught up in the whole ‘I’ve got to win my money back,’” Gribbohm told CBS. “You’re expecting the kids to win a few things, let the kids have a good time,” Gribbohm said. “It just didn’t turn out that way.”

“For once in my life I happened to become that sucker,” Gribbohm said. “I was foolish for putting up my life savings.”

Currently, New Hampshire police are looking into whether the game was rigged or not. Gribbohm regained some of his money but must now deal with his newfound recognition. Not everyone can say they blew thousands on a carnival game after all. The game operator could face fines and criminal penalties if the game was indeed rigged. In the end, the investigation could take a few weeks.

According to Canoe, comedy website College Humor has launched a campaign to buy the banana from Gribbohm. If their Facebook post about the campaign elicits 26,000 “likes,” they will buy the banana for $2,600. If it gets to 30,000 likes, they’ll buy him an Xbox Kinect, too.
