Octomom Court Appearance on Welfare Fraud Charges

Nadya Suleman, the single mother who gained international attention as the “Octomom” who added 8 children to her brood of six through fertility treatments, had to appear in court in Los Angeles last Friday to answer charges of welfare fraud. Suleman allegedly received welfare checks amounting to almost $17,000 despite the fact that she already had an income of $30,000 from royalties and personal appearances. The District Attorney’s office of Los Angeles County brought the fraud charges against the “Octomom”, reporting that she illegally accepted CalWorks financial aid assistance in addition to food stamps because she failed to report her true income.

The charges of perjury on her application forms in addition to misrepresentation just may cause Suleman to wind up behind bars for as long as five years. The 38-year old Suleman became an internet sensation six years ago when she delivered octuplets, despite the fact that she already had six other children, no husband and was already receiving government financial assistance. Suleman pleaded not guilty to three counts of fraud and is not yet behind bars. In cases of welfare fraud, the district attorney usually requires repayment of stolen funds in exchange for avoiding prison.
