Nickolay Lamm Barbie A Makeover: Barbie Gets a Real-World Makeover
Nickolay Lamm Give Barbie a Makeover
The popular doll, Barbie, is receiving her first makeover in 54 years. Frequently criticized for her unrealistic proportions, Pittsburgh artist, Nickolay Lamm, has created a modern day version of Barbie.
In recent years, skinny Barbie has received much controversial feedback. Concerns have been voiced that presenting children with such an unrealistic example of the female body encourages eating disorders and preoccupation with food and weight.
Lamm’s new “normal Barbie,” is designed to represent the size, height and weight of an average 19 year old woman. Normal Barbie is shorter, has a fuller figure and a more proportionately sized head. Still blonde, toned and tanned, normal Barbie portrays a more realistic depiction of what the actual female body looks like, reports Stuff.
“A lot of people say we shouldn’t criticize Barbie because she is a toy,” Lamm told the website. “However, if there’s a small chance that it’s negatively affecting young girls, and if normal Barbie looks awesome, why not create normal Barbie?”
If skinny Barbie were a real women, she would be approximately 6 feet tall, weight 100 pounds and have a 16 inch waist. This would place Barbie’s body mass index in the extremely underweight category. Skinny Barbie would be too emaciated to menstruate or to walk, and most likely have a host of other health problems.
Although Barbie’s makeover started out as a simple experiment by Lamm, the general consensus seems to be that normal Barbie actually looks much better than her skinny counterpart.
“If we criticize skinny models, we should at least be open to the possibility that Barbie may negatively influence young girls as well,” Lamm told the Huffington Post. “Furthermore, a realistically proportioned Barbie actually looks pretty good.”

What if Barbie looked like a real woman? Artist Nickolay Lamm answers this question with his latest work. He created a 3D Barbie-sized model of a healthy, average 19-year-old American woman, based upon data from measurements provided by the Centers for Disease Control. “The end result,” he writes, “is what Barbie would look like if she was a healthy, beautiful, 19 year old woman.”
