Stevie Nicks Admits Prince Came On to Her During Recording of Purple Rain

Stevie Nicks, the lead singer of Fleetwood Mac, helped iconic rocker Prince record the track “Purple Rain” for the album of the same name back in 1984. At the time, Nicks had released her second solo album “The Wild Heart” which peaked at #5 on Billboard’s Record Chart and would go on to sell two million copies.

For his part, Prince was putting together his first album after finally having a commercial success two years earlier with the album “1999”. At his request, Nicks listened to his demo recording of the song that would become the title track to the “Purple Rain” album which Prince had asked her to collaborate on. In fact, Prince had asked her to write the lyrics to song’s music, but she declined. It wasn’t that she didn’t believe the song would be epic, she just didn’t believe she could contribute to the recording telling him she did not understand “where to begin”.

However, it wasn’t only the lyrics to the song that she turned down. The iconic singer had the hots for her and wanted their friendship to become romantic. They even spent the night together on one occasion but that was purely plutonic.

“‘ve still got it [the demo cassette] – with the whole instrumental track and a little bit of Prince singing, ‘Can’t get over that feeling’, or something,” she said in a recent interview with Mojo Magazine. “I told him, ‘Prince, I’ve listened to this a hundred times but I wouldn’t know where to start. It’s a movie, it’s epic.”

She added: “The olive branch of him giving me that cassette was huge, but I think he would have liked a romance with me, too.”

Nicks insists that nothing happened between them. She said: “I get on the plane and the rest of the band are like [drum fingers, rolls eyes]. I’m like, ‘What? Nothing happened.'”
