Take My Breath Away- Christine Fox Named Active Deputy Defense Secretary
Yesterday, Christine Fox, former director of Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation at the Pentagon, was appointed a new position. She was officially named acting deputy defense secretary at the Pentagon, temporarily taking over for Ashton Carter until a permanent replacement can be appointed. Ms. Fox comes highly regarded and praised by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and is now the highest ranked woman at the Pentagon.
If none of this is impressive enough, Ms. Fox’s role in the 1980s might be. As a specialist in maritime and air defense, one of her key duties was working with fighter pilots and assisting in developing tactics for defending aircraft carriers. She was based at the Naval Air Station Miramar in California. Today, the Navy calls it Fighter Weapons School. The flyers call it: Top Gun. Yes, Ms. Fox was the inspiration for Kelly McGillis’ character Charlotte Blackwood, in the 1986 Tony Scott movie, “Top Gun.”
Unfortunately, for those are feeling the need, the need for speed over this, Fox assures that the movie took a lot of liberties with her character, especially, and that romance was not as glamorous or poetic as portrayed. Apparently it does take a lot more than just fancy flying, Maverick.
