It a major testament to pop-culture, the internet age and the entertainment industry, when terms such as “twerk” and “selfie” have been officially added to the Oxford Dictionary. These slang words and the actions that define them have had such an effect on society that it was decided that they were not passing phases and should be added to this long distinguished periodical.
Internet and cellphone users are no stranger to the term “selfie.” This is the action wherein an individual takes a photograph of themselves with an electronic device and shares it. The Oxford Dictionary officially defines a “selfie” as follows: “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.”
Twerking is a dance phenomenon that has spread throughout late 2012 and 2013, and made news around the world when Miley Cyrus performed the move during a recent controversial appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards. Her performance made the term “twerk” a household term.
Days later on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 it was decided that the dance move would receive its own spot in the Oxford Dictionary.
Every year more and more words that people believe to be slang or internet jargon end up making it into this dictionary. As pop-culture and the media continue to dominate the world it is hard telling what passing phrases will make it into the Oxford Dictionary next.
