As Canadian As? Drake’s Cool New Video at Shoppers Drug Mart

Drugstore chains in North America are curious retail establishments firmly engrained in popular culture, and in some cases they are elevated to faux patriotic status. Such is the case of Shoppers Drug Mart, a Canadian retail chain that is similar to, but more appreciated than, its United States counterparts Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, Duane Reade, etc.

Shoppers Drug Mart is featured prominently in rapper Drake’s video for his new song Started from the Bottom.

The popular rapper, who is a native of Toronto, chose to film part of his new video at a Shoppers Drug Mart in Binbrook, not far from Hamilton. Started from the Bottom is the latest single in support of Drake’s latest album, Nothing Was the Same.

In the video, Drake explores the familiar theme of rising up through diligent effort as he is promoted to night manager at Shoppers Drug Mart after reminding co-workers about proper demeanor when asking for Optimum Points, a loyalty program discount and savings program. Once Drake is promoted, he makes it rain with coupons and dances through the aisles.

Canadians living abroad will immediately recognize Shoppers Drug Mart when they watch Drake’s new video playing on MTV or MuchMusic.

The video is already having a positive effect for the drugstore chain, which has 600,000 Facebook followers, even though it portrays the bottom that Drake refers to in his new song.
