Jarome Iginla Traded To The Pittsburgh Penguins: Sidney Crosby Gets New Winger
Penguins trade away future to acquire Iginla. Bruins shocked.
The Pittsburgh Penguins announced late Wednesday night they had acquired 16 year veteran and future Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla from the Calgary Flames in exchange for the rights to college players Kenneth Agostino and Ben Hanowski and their first-round pick in the 2013 draft.The move culminated a busy week for Penguins GM Ray Shero who acquired winger Brenden Morrow from Dallas and highly sought after defenseman Doug Murray from San Jose prior to nailing down the deal for Iginla.
The Penns, who have won only one playoff series since claiming the Stanley Cup back in 2009, are apparently determined to avoid another post season embarrassment, even if it comes at a potentially hefty future cost.
They have dealt away a first-round pick, three other high picks and three prospects in a bid to bring home the cup in 2013. Neither Iginla, Morrow or Murray are under contract beyond this season.
The Boston Bruins, themselves Eastern Conference contenders, were shocked by the turn of events.
There had been reports throughout the evening that Iginla was going to the Bruins.
Shortly after midnight, a TSN report declared that the deal had bone done. But a little more than an hour later the Flames announced that, at the request of Iginla, the trade had been completed with the Penguins.
Iginla will again team up with Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby. The two made hockey history at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver when Iginla assisted on Crosby’s game winner to capture the gold for Canada
