Mayweather Vs. Canelo

Despite the pre-fight hype that suggested that legendary champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. was about to lose his crown to the up and coming challenger, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. But, in the end, the fight was a one sided affair, as Mayweather pummeled and punked his red haired opponent. At its conclusion, the fight was scored for Mayweather, in a judge’s decision. The only surprise was that one of the judges, C.J. Ross gave an even score of 114-114.

According to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, Ross’ scorecard was totally inexplicable. Mayweahter out-landed Alvarez 232-117, yet Ross somehow found a way to give Alvarez six rounds. It has to rank as one of the worst judging calls in the history of boxing, as Mayweather utterly outclassed Alvarez.

But the fight was never even remotely close. Mayweather easily dodged all of Alvarez’s challenges, and stayed well out of his opponent’s reach. Alvarez scored a few punches here and there, but seemed unable to connect them together into anything like a rally. In the end, he was simply punching the clock, entering the ring at the beginning of each round with the air of a beaten man.

Mayweather has scored yet another victory, impressive for a fighter his age. Meanwhile, his opponent, Alvarez, has just been handed his very first defeat after 44 appearances in the ring. The search for a prospective challenger for Floyd Mayweather, Jr. continues. It is much less certain what the future will hold for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

here's a shot of the official scorecards from tonight's Floyd Mayweather rout (even if not scored that way) of Canelo Alvarez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. 116-112 was bad enough, 117-111 may even be giving Alvarez too much credit, and 114-114 from Ross is completely insane. Ross gave Canelo four of the last five rounds. Somehow.
