Rogue Stork Attacks German Village
Residents of Bergholz, a small village in northern Germany were baffled when unexplained damage began to appear on their vehicles, until one resident caught a male stork in the act.
“We saw the bird messing with our family car. After we shooed the stork away, our neighbors’ car was next.” reported Kerstin Werth to the daily Der Nordkurier.
The bird has been seen throughout the streets of Bergholz attacking cars and house windows. Damage to each vehicle has been estimated at $390 to $1,300.
Helumut Eggers, head of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) stated that the bird’s behavior is territorial.
“This stork sees his reflection in the sides of cars or windows and thinks it is a rival in his territory. It only follows that he would try to chase this rival away by pecking at him,” stated Eggers.
Villagers have begun to cover their cars with blankets and cardboard in an effort to deter the bird from attacks.
The appearance of the bird in a residential area is thought to be due to a steady loss of the stork’s habitat.
Eggers stated, “The shrinking food supply means they are venturing into people’s gardens and into the streets.”
