Katy Perry To Ditch Pop For Acoustic guitar?

Katy Perry Giving Up On Pop

After releasing three studio albums throughout her existential career, Katy Perry has decided to call it quits. The “I Kissed A Girl” songstress still plans on making music, but instead of belting out pop songs, like the ones her fans have come to know and love, she’ll be delving into a completely different sound — acoustic guitar.

According to ABC4.com, Perry plans to channel a famous Canadian musician for her fourth album: “I’ll probably turn into more of a Joni Mitchell,” Perry said. “As I inch toward my 30’s, I think my fourth record will be more of an acoustic guitar album.”

If nothing else, this statement is evidence of her intention to be in the music industry for the long-haul as opposed to being more of a fly-by-night kind of artist. In her original interview with Billboard, Perry confessed that she’s still a work in progress, and she believes that she has what it takes to remain relevant.

She tells Billboard.com, “I’ll probably turn into more of a Joni Mitchell. As I inch towards my 30s, I think my fourth record will be more of an acoustic guitar album. That’s where I started when I was first discovered by (songwriter/producer) Glen Ballard and got my first record deal. We’ll see – I can’t get ahead of myself. I’m still doing the work: I’m a good balance of left and right brain, and to be an artist with a long career, you’ve got to have both… I’ve got a few records under my belt, and I still feel like a brand-new artist. People still want that truth to cut through.”

She also tells Billboard that boyfriend John Mayer is a “genius.”

“He literally is a genius, as is evident from his songwriting.”

“I always tell him, ‘Darling, you know I’m going to have to give your mind to science after you’ve passed, because we’re going to have to understand how all these sparks work.'”

Perry also revealed it’s not just Mayer’s music that makes him brilliant.

“We’ll be in bed, and he’ll be doing the crossword puzzle. Every night, he tries to finish it in under 10 minutes. When he puts his mind to something, he really gets it done very well. I always ask for his help.”

The ‘I kissed A Girl’ singer went on to recall to Billboard about her sit down with Walters for her “Most Fascinating People of 2011” special when things were not going so well in her personal life.

“I shouldn’t have done the interview: I was playing Madison Square Garden that same night, and I knew that the end of my marriage was coming,” she said of her 14-month union to Russell Brand that was unraveling.

“I’d prepped everyone that I was running late, but Barbara showed up at the original time anyway. When I got there, I apologized immediately, but then she said to me, ‘You know, I’ve only ever waited for one other person this long, and you know who that person was? Judy Garland. You know how she turned out, right?'”

For now, listeners can still hear Katy’s familiar pop sound on her latest body of work, “Prism,” scheduled to be released on Oct. 18, 2013.
